When I first started in the direct sales profession, I was apprehensive about creating conversations with people who were interested in my business. I worried that I would flounder, say too much, sound like fool, be unable to answer their questions, or worse yet, feel embarrassed if they said, “No thank you!”
My focus in entering the sponsoring conversation was all about me and my fears. This was a very disempowering experience. And, quite frankly, it was self-centered.
As I jumped into personal growth mode, I soon realized that sponsoring is not about the convincing game, controlling the conversation, reciting the perfect script, or having the one-liner closing technique. Sponsoring is about the empowerment game. It’s about connecting and engaging with another human being by creating conversations between two new friends.
Fun and rewarding sponsoring is experienced when you see the journey as an opportunity to connect and serve rather than an obligation to interview and convince. Your focus turns to discovering your possibility thinker’s “why” and then sharing how you, and your business, can transform those hopes into a reality.
Engaging your possibility thinkers with authentic questions demonstrates your respect and trust for them. You acknowledge that they are the expert in their own life. By asking the right questions, you’re laying the foundation for their success. From the very beginning they will be clear about why they’re committed to becoming a consultant and growing their direct sales business. You’ll empower your possibility thinkers to confidently “close” themselves, and that is dynamic and authentic.
